Trials by Fire

(A Shakespearian Sonnet in honor of William Patrick Devon Harris and his everlasting optimism.)

How can we be certain of what truly matters
In Life if every obstacle is easily evaded,
If every opportunity arrives on a silver platter,
If the shimmering love of relationships never fades?

How can we kindle a loving passion if
Our paramours bow before us, succumbing to our desires?
How can we have a passion for Life if
Nothing challenges us, nothing mires?

How do we rise above the crowd, make our mark
On a world entrenched with unconcerned mortals?
How do we find that divine inner spark
In a world vacant of mysterious portals?

How do we acknowledge the majesty of the human soul
If the trials by fire never play their role?
